Major flooding postpones opening of the Acronis school in Laos

This August, construction of a new Acronis school in Dong Na Kham village, Savannakhet Province, Laos was finished. The celebratory opening ceremony, originally planned for September 17, was postponed to December 10 due to severe flooding throughout the region.

Tropical Cyclone Podul-19 brought heavy rainfall to the middle part of the lower Mekong basin, from Mukdahan of Thailand to Pakse of Laos, causing a sudden rise in the Mekong River. The situation is getting worse in the South of Laos. Pakse, the largest city in the region, is now completely flooded.

This area is prone to flooding, but 2019 tropical storms were especially extreme.

Given the state of the road, the village is largely inaccessible. Luckily, all the Dong Na Kham community members are safe and the school plans to begin operations in a few days.
