In 2023, Acronis took a step towards enhancing educational opportunities in rural Guatemala by funding the construction of two computer classrooms for Monte Mercedes School, located in the department of Sololá. Monte Mercedes is a vibrant community primarily inhabited by the Kaqchiquel, Quiche, and Tzutujile indigenous peoples. This initiative was aimed at bridging the digital divide and providing students with the tools needed to succeed in today’s technology-driven world. The construction was recently completed, providing 286 boys and girls with access to modern educational facilities and technology resources.
Monte Mercedes School offers education from pre-primary to secondary school levels across two shifts. Despite the national curriculum of Guatemala including IT, not all schools are adequately equipped. Monte Mercedes faced a significant challenge with only 16 computers available for all students in the school. This shortage forced students to attend a private computer academy located 4 km away from the school, posing additional logistical challenges.
To address this issue, Acronis provided additional laptops and outfitted two classrooms specifically for primary and secondary school students. This initiative ensures that students have better access to technology, allowing them to enhance their IT skills and knowledge. The well-trained teachers at Monte Mercedes are now equipped to conduct ICT classes efficiently, maximizing the benefits of these new resources.
The classrooms have been painted in multiple colors to create a lively and engaging environment for the students, making learning more enjoyable and stimulating. Kaydi Maria Menchu Bocel, a student at Monte Mercedes, expressed her enthusiasm: “I like it a lot because the room is very beautiful and it is very creative. Technology would help us learn quickly and get to know the world. When I grow up, I would like to be a pediatrician and thus be able to help humanity.”
The sustainability of this project is ensured through a collaborative effort involving the parents’ board, community leaders, and teachers. They have collectively agreed to pay a monthly fee to guarantee the future maintenance of the equipment. This act of community solidarity ensures that the computer classrooms remain in excellent condition, benefiting future generations of students.
The establishment of the new computer classrooms is a significant milestone for Monte Mercedes School and the broader community. It not only enhances the educational infrastructure but also inspires hope and ambition among the students. With improved facilities and access to technology, the students of Monte Mercedes are better prepared to face the future and achieve their dreams. Vilma Par, the Middle Grade Principal, shared her gratitude: “Now we see the result of your good heart; thank you for helping indiscriminately. Now the primary and basic schools have first-world facilities! The rural school is now in better condition than the urban school, and it is only thanks to you!”
