Update on the computer classroom in Lucknow, India

The introduction of a computer lab at Study Hall School on Kanpur Road in March 2023 has sparked a series of positive transformations. Located in a rural area on the outskirts of Lucknow, Study Hall primarily serves students from low-income families, offering a beacon of hope in an area that lacks quality educational resources and infrastructure. The establishment of the computer lab marked a significant step forward in enriching students’ academic experiences.

This lab, catering to students from pre-primary to class 9th, is pivotal in familiarizing them with digital concepts and tools from an early age. It is a vital resource in bridging the digital divide. Teachers have observed significant developments in children’s cognitive, social, creative, and critical thinking skills. Students demonstrate progress in computer proficiency, asking insightful questions and independently completing tasks like creating event checklists.

The impact of the computer lab extends beyond the confines of the school premises, influencing the overall atmosphere and educational ethos of Study Hall. A notable shift has occurred among children regarding the perception of technology’s significance in our daily lives. Their enthusiasm for computer classes has translated into advocacy at home, gradually persuading parents to embrace technology. For instance, online teaching persists amidst extreme weather conditions, prompting school closures. Roughly a year and a half ago, only 10% of students opted for online classes, citing issues like network connectivity or outdated devices. Now, approximately 70% actively participate. Even those sharing devices with siblings coordinate schedules, either visiting friends’ homes or informing teachers of their attendance arrangements.

In its nascent years, situated in a semi-urban setting, the school has experienced gradual transformation. Initially, enrollment stood at 127 students, but currently, it educates 160 children. The school maintains an average attendance rate of 88%, with growing interest evident through increased admission inquiries, especially during admission season. Expectations are high for further enrollment growth in the upcoming cycle.

The introduction of the computer lab has motivated teachers to adopt more creative and innovative teaching methods. They now dedicate more time to researching concepts to satisfy students’ curiosity, which has improved their understanding of computers and enriched their teaching approach. This has led to increased engagement and attention from students.

The computer lab at Study Hall School is more than a technological upgrade; it is a catalyst for educational and community transformation. The strides made in digital literacy, online learning adoption, enrollment growth, and teacher empowerment underscore the profound impact of this initiative on the lives of students and their families. And we invite individuals, groups, and companies to partner with us and broaden the scope of action for communities across the world. Contact us to find out more!
