A safe and inspiring space is transforming lives in Don Juan

Two years ago, Acronis funded the construction of a vital community space in Don Juan, Ecuador, turning a vision into reality. What was once an idea is now a thriving hub for education, skill development, and empowerment, positively impacting children, teenagers, and adults alike.

Since its opening, the outdoor area has become a safe and dynamic environment where more than 30 children gather daily to work on school projects and receive homework support. The space has also become a key meeting point for teenagers from the Bosque Mar program, who use it for planning activities and learning German. Meanwhile, local women have found opportunities for entrepreneurship, coming together to prepare and sell traditional food, gaining financial independence and business skills in the process.

Volunteers play a crucial role in this ecosystem, and the newly built accommodations have enabled continuous participation, fostering mentorship and knowledge-sharing.

The impact of this space extends beyond individual learning, benefiting the entire community in meaningful ways. It has become a welcoming place for group activities, classes, and workshops, fostering collaboration and shared learning. The addition of comfortable volunteer housing has enabled long-term engagement, allowing volunteers to stay and contribute more effectively. Beyond education, the space promotes wellness and mindfulness, offering a peaceful environment for yoga, meditation, and reflection. It also serves as a center for environmental education, providing children and adults with opportunities to connect with nature and learn about sustainability.

Beyond daily learning, this space has strengthened community ties. Local teachers have participated in training workshops, integrating new teaching strategies into their classrooms. The area has also become a gathering place for events such as open houses, poetry celebrations, and holiday festivities, fostering a spirit of togetherness.

The positive influence of this project extends beyond education. The center has become a haven for teenagers and young adults, offering them a constructive alternative to street life, helping to deter risks such as gang involvement and substance abuse.

Looking ahead, the project is set to expand even further with exciting new initiatives. A computer center is in the works to enhance digital learning opportunities, ensuring children and young adults have access to technology and essential skills for the future. To address local water scarcity, plans are underway to construct a rainwater collection system, which will help supply water for bathrooms and plant irrigation. Additionally, a new fence is a priority, as the current bamboo structure is deteriorating and does not provide adequate security. With continued dedication from staff, volunteers, and community members, these improvements will further strengthen the project’s impact, creating an even safer and more enriching space for everyone involved.
