Project implementation
Molo Mhlaba means “Hello, world” in Xhosa language (it’s the first message that most people will generate when starting computer science classes). It is a girls’ school located in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa. The school aims to provide high-quality, safe, and affordable education for black girls, especially those living in underserved communities. It is an iSTEAM school that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to prepare girls from poverty-stricken communities for the jobs of tomorrow. The school also teaches coding, Lego robotics, and even how to build computers from scratch to help the girls become creators of technology and develop strong, independent, critical-thinking minds.
The biggest challenge with the current school in Khayelitsha is that it is located in a rented facility that was not designed for educational purposes. Acronis has funded the first part of the project to build a new child-centric school building that will belong to the community and provide Khayelitsha’s youth with the space and resources they need for a 21st-century education. The existing school’s land has already been purchased, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building took place on April 27th, 2023.
